The Weekend Reading Roundup

This weekend was Mother’s Day weekend! After a rainy week, we had very nice weather on Long Island, which was so lovely. May is Get Caught Reading month - so I’ll share what we were reading this weekend. It was actually a good weekend for getting some reading into each day.

My older daughter came home from school with the book, Dewey: The Library Cat by Vicki Myron. It’s a true story about a library cat. I read the adult version of the book many years ago and completely forgot that there is a kid’s version. Anyway, my daughter is really enjoying reading this story and has been sharing her reactions as she is reading. She is really good about getting reading into her days. She will read for a few minutes here and there throughout the day - particularly when she has a little bit of downtime. The book is due back to the library tomorrow and I am optimistic that she will be able to finish reading it tonight.

She and I are reading 12 Before 13 by Lisa Greenwald and we have five more chapters to go! I am curious how the story will be wrapped up. There are a couple of storylines that are still very much open and both of us are curious how it will be wrapped up. When we finish this book, we are going to read Isle of Ever by Jen Calonita - I am so excited to read this book because it is set on Long Island!!

My younger daughter and I finished reading Otherwise Known as Sheila The Great by Judy Blume. This is the second book in the Fudge Series. We read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing last summer and my kids loved that book. Sheila is not my favorite book in the series, but my younger daughter really enjoyed it and I was impressed by how many connections she was able to make. She also remembered a few things about Sheila from Tales. This is what I love about series books - we continue with the characters over multiple books. It really helps kids learn so much about how characters change over time.

As soon as we finished Sheila, my younger daughter ran to get the next book in the series, Superfudge! After she grabbed it yesterday, my older daughter heard and came in to read with us. She does not want to miss out on another Fudge story! Right away in the first chapter, Judy Blume references an incident that happened in the Tales book. Both of my daughters remembered it and were laughing thinking about Fudge causing trouble at the restaurant. My favorite part about last night was when both of them begged to read another chapter. This got me thinking - this same thing happened at the Literacy Clinic last week. Kids have so many options for how they fill their time today. I don’t always think they know how much they enjoy or will enjoy reading. So, it’s up to us as parents and educators to teach them that reading can be fun.

And, now for what I am reading! I am almost finished with the latest Emily Henry book, Great Big Beautiful Life. I am enjoying this book - it is going in another direction than I expected, but I am enjoying the story. I love the characters and the setting is amazing (other than the very hot Georgia weather!).
